Vintage Japanese Ukiyo-e Hokusai Woodblock Print Mt Fuji Red Fuji Penn Prints 18x13 7of8

This marvelous Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock is one of a prize collection of 8 beautiful and famous Japanese woodblocks, reproduced from the rare, old originals; published by Penn Press, New York circa mid to late 1950s.  The Japanese term, ukiyo-e means pictures of the floating world, a euphemism for the entertainment or pleasure districts of urban centers.  Ukiyo-e were painted illustrations of Japanese daily life in urban centers, mercantile and trade, travel, landscapes, and seasons and weather, throughout the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s.


Description:  


This marvelous Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock is one of a “prize collection of 8 beautiful and famous Japanese woodblocks, reproduced from the rare, old originals”; published by Penn Press, New York circa mid to late 1950s.  The Japanese term, ukiyo-e means “pictures of the floating world,” a euphemism for the entertainment or pleasure districts of urban centers.  Ukiyo-e were painted illustrations of Japanese daily life in urban centers, mercantile and trade, travel, landscapes, and seasons and weather, throughout the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s.

  • Landscape orientation, 18” wide x 13” high with borders
  • Print produced by Penn Prints, New York, mid 20th Century on quality card stock; copyright stamped on lower right corner
  • All of the prints measure 18” wide x 13” high (landscape orientation) OR 13” wide x 18” high (portrait orientation)
  • Actual print view of landscape prints is 13.75” wide x 8.75” high
  • Actual print view of portrait prints is 9” wide x 14” high
  • All of the prints have approx 2”+ white borders
  • Circa 1950s
  • I acquired these prints along with many more various print portfolios and framed prints many years ago from the estate of a prolific art enthusiast and philanthropist, with many sold already and many yet left to sell.
  • Vintage Japanese color print in very good to excellent condition with light age discoloration.  Unused, never framed; stored in the portfolio folder, untouched, for decades.  May be a faint smudge here or there on borders, or faint crease in card stock from handling and storage, in one or two of the eight prints, but overall very good to excellent condition.  This print is one of a collection of eight Japanese prints from same collection, each sold separately.
